'Land Given to God' (Tuku Fonua ki Langi) was commissioned by Sione Malekamu Manu Jr for the Tonga Secondary School Music Festival in commemoration of two centuries since the arrival of Christianity in the Kingdom of Tonga. This work represents a landmark achievement in Tongan musical heritage, being the first major brass band test-piece written specifically for Tonga, and is intended to reflect the spiritual transformation, cultural identity, and constitutional development of the nation.

The Kingdom of Tonga is an archipelago in the South Pacific comprising over 170 islands, of which approximately 40 are inhabited. These islands are traditionally grouped into Tongatapu, Ha’apai, Vava’u, and the Niuas. Tonga remains the only hereditary constitutional monarchy in the South Pacific and one of the few Pacific nations never formally colonised by a foreign power.

The arrival of Christianity in the early 19th century marked one of the most transformative periods in Tongan history. Over time, the Christian faith became interwoven with governance, law, and national identity.

The work draws its principal musical inspiration from the beloved Tongan hymn Oku ‘iai ha ki’i fonua ‘oku tu’u ‘i ‘oseni. The hymn tells of a small nation standing in the vast ocean — once without knowledge of God, yet ultimately transformed and blessed through faith. It speaks of the planting of the Church, the proclamation of the Word, and the uniting of Kingdom and Church under divine sovereignty. It affirms national identity grounded in Christian belief, calling the people of Tonga to faithful labour, prayer, and loyalty, and entrusting both land and monarch to the protection of God.

This composition recounts the unfolding journey of Tonga — from its ancestral faith to spiritual renewal, through trial and reform, culminating in the historic act of Tuku Fonua in 1839, when King Siaosi Tupou I solemnly entrusted the land and people of Tonga to the divine protection of God.
